Juanita Lucille Lattimore was born October 1, 1928, in Johnson City, Tennessee to Sophia and Albert Powell. Sophia and Albert moved to Cleveland, Ohio not long after Juanita wasborn. She was the eldest of their children. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sisters, Dorothy King, Charles Powell, Earl Powell, Henry Powell,Preston Powell, Judith Powell and Bobby Powell. Juanita grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and was a child during the Great Depression. She freely spoke about how hard it was for her family during that time. She also shared manyinteresting and humorous stories about growing up with her family. She often said that the first time she saw Felix Lattimore she knew she was going to marryhim. They married on April 1, 1944. They remained married until his death in November 1989. From that union five daughters were born: Wanda, Carlotta, Loretta, Angela and
Celeste. Juanita enjoyed being a homemaker while raising her girls but didn’t mind working part time to help support the family. She enjoyed decorating, working in the yard, sewing, listening to music, singing and was very artistic. She also enjoyed preparing meals and truly enjoyed being served delicious food at a restaurant, especially desserts, and a good cup ofcoffee. She also loved wearing colorful outfits, hats and red lipstick. In her early twenties, she was introduced to Bible truths and began a bible study. She often said that what she was learning was what she had been praying for! At the age of 21, she dedicated her life to serving Jehovah God and was baptized. She never looked back! Shetaught her daughters the truth and boldly spoke to the others about the Bible. She also studied the Bible with her brother Preston who was later baptized. Juanita loved the door-to-door ministry, conducting bible studies and reading the Bible. Infact, she loved to read everything and was well versed at almost every subject or news event. Juanita loved being with her family. In the 1970s, the family would often come to the house for barbeques that Felix loved to host. She can also be remembered for taking several of the grandkids to movies, plays, out to eat, downtown or the mall. She enjoyed visitors in her later years at the nursing home. Juanita was known for being a “big talker”, especially about her beliefs. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed laughing. She would often say something positive to cheer you up or encourage you. Juanita believed in God’s promises for the earth and mankind and the resurrection hope. She held that dear to her heart and instilled it in her daughters and family. She was very proud that her five daughters were all in truth. When introduced to someone she would always say “I have five daughters, and they are all in the truth!” Those left to cherish her memory include: her daughters Wanda Jean Spates (Ron), Carlotta Bey, Loretta Jones (Shelton), Angela Talley and Celeste Kirkwood. Her grandchildren: Ron Spates, Jr., Sharleah Spates, Sylvia Finnie, Ricardo Spates, Brandon Spates, Qiana Spates, Roderick Spates, Brent Byrd, Candace Taylor, Joseph Jones, Joel Jones, Tamea Ryan, Marvienne Talley, James Talley III, Timothy Talley, Benjamin Talley, Nicole Kirkwood, John Kirkwood, Jr., and twenty-six great grandchildren and seventeen great-great grandchildren. At least sixty direct descendants. Juanita also had many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory and a host of friends over her 70 years of service to Jehovah.
